What tooling means
Tooling includes production assets used to make, locate, form, cut, seal or inspect a product. A mold forms material in a cavity. A die cuts, stamps or forms material. A jig guides work or a tool; a fixture holds a workpiece in a repeatable position.
Prototype tooling may prioritize speed and lower development commitment. Production tooling may be designed for longer life, tighter process control, more cavities or higher output. The buyer should not assume the same price, material or acceptance standard applies to both.
Mold design, material, cavities and useful life
The product drawing, shrink allowance, gating, ejection, cooling, cavity layout and machine compatibility influence tool design. Tool material affects machining, wear, repair and expected production life. More cavities can increase output but also add balance, validation and maintenance considerations.
Request the tool material, number of cavities and an expected useful-life basis. A life estimate is not a guarantee unless the agreement defines conditions, maintenance and remedies.
Tolerance, surface finish and production requirements
Tolerance, surface texture, polish, color appearance, cooling and cycle targets can affect design and cost. Specify which dimensions are critical and how they will be measured. A surface sample or texture reference should use controlled revision information.
Do not approve a cheaper tool without understanding effects on cycle time, part consistency, flash, warpage, finish, maintenance or replacement timing.
What a tooling quotation should define
Separate tool design, tool material, manufacture, test shots, first samples, measurement, modification rounds, acceptance evidence, packing and any transport. Identify buyer-supplied and supplier-created drawings or files.
Do not use one universal mold-price benchmark. Geometry, process, material, cavities, tolerance, finish, tool life and factory capability differ.

Test shots, samples, modifications and tool acceptance
A first test shot shows initial output; it does not automatically prove the tool is accepted for production. Define the resin or material, machine, process settings, sample quantity, dimensional checks, appearance, function and any correction cycle.

Tooling fee, unit price and amortization
A tooling fee is normally a one-time development charge, while unit price is recurring production cost. Some arrangements spread or amortize tooling across units; others charge it separately. Confirm the quantity, period, unit-price effect and treatment if actual volume differs.
A refundable or credited tooling arrangement only exists if the written terms define the amount, volume condition, timing and evidence. Do not assume a payment is refundable.

Ownership, marking, storage and permitted use
Payment does not by itself answer who owns the physical tool, design files or improvements. The agreement should address buyer ownership, supplier ownership or any shared claim, along with exclusivity and permitted use for other customers.
Assign a tool ID, mark the physical asset where feasible, record its location and maintain a tooling register. State storage period, environment, access and what happens after inactivity. Obtain qualified advice where legal ownership matters.
Maintenance, repair, wear and replacement
Define routine maintenance, records, inspection intervals and who pays for ordinary wear. Separate supplier-caused damage, buyer-requested changes and end-of-life replacement. Identify critical inserts or wear parts and expected availability.
A useful-life estimate should state operating assumptions. Production beyond that estimate may need refurbishment or replacement, which should not be hidden inside an undefined future unit price.
CAD files, modifications and design control
Confirm which 2D drawings, 3D models, tool drawings, programs and process files the buyer receives and in which format. Supplier manufacturing know-how may remain confidential, while buyer-created product files need separate protection.
Record every modification against a revision, including who requested it, cost, schedule, ownership and effect on accepted samples. A verbal change can create later disputes about which tool or product was approved.
Transfer, supplier closure, damage and loss
A right to transfer should identify notice, payment status, tool condition, files, lifting, export or domestic transport, packaging and removal cost. A tool designed for one supplier's machine may require adaptation elsewhere.
Define what happens if the supplier closes, stops cooperation, loses the tool or reports damage. Practical recovery and legal remedies depend on the agreement and law; a website checklist cannot guarantee removal or recovery.
Maintain a tooling register
Keep one record per asset with tool ID, supplier, location, product and drawing revision, photographs, material, cavities, acceptance date, payment status, ownership wording, maintenance history, modifications, expected life and transfer terms.
Review the register before repeat production, supplier changes and audits. It should point to signed documents rather than replace them.
Example: injection-molded plastic housing
The buyer defines steel or aluminum tooling, cavity count, surface texture, critical dimensions, resin, test-shot quantity, included modifications and expected life assumptions. Samples are measured and function-tested before final acceptance.
The quote separates the tool from the recurring part price. Any later texture or geometry change is documented as a revision.

The buyer confirms die material, product tolerance, expected output, maintenance, wear parts, trial pieces and replacement responsibility. The accepted strip layout and drawing revision are recorded.
Packaging machine
Custom tooling may include forming sets, sealing jaws, cutters, guides, fixtures and change parts. The entire machine is not called a mold. Each change part needs identification, compatible product dimensions, acceptance checks, spare strategy and ownership terms.
