During Production Inspection vs Pre-Shipment Inspection

A during-production inspection checks an order while manufacturing is underway, while a pre-shipment inspection usually checks a substantially completed and packed lot before shipment. The earlier stage can reveal process drift while correction is still possible; the later stage provides stronger evidence about finished quantity, workmanship, packaging and labels. Neither service universally replaces the other. New, custom, technically complex, delay-sensitive or high-risk orders may justify both, provided the buyer carefully defines the timing, sample, tests and decision rules in writing.

Where each inspection sits in the sourcing process

An initial check can review materials and first output. DUPRO reviews active production. PSI, sometimes described operationally as final random inspection, reviews a more complete lot. Loading supervision checks the container and loaded quantity; it does not replace product inspection.

A factory audit evaluates facility capability, not one batch. Compliance testing and final commercial acceptance remain separate decisions.

Timing and production-readiness rules

There is no universal completion percentage. DUPRO needs enough output to reveal recurring issues while enough work remains for correction. PSI normally needs the required assortment, quantity and final packing available.

Require the supplier to report finished, packed and remaining quantities before travel. State what happens if the order is not ready.

What a during-production inspection can reveal

DUPRO can compare available production with the specification and approved sample, review materials or components on site, measure output, observe selected operations and identify repeated defects. Typical checks include workmanship, dimensions, function, color, assembly, component use, work-in-progress quantity and production schedule.

Its main advantage is not a guaranteed outcome; it is the opportunity to contain a problem before the remaining lot repeats it. A useful report should separate observed facts, sampled results, progress estimates and corrective-action requests. It should not infer future conformity from a small early batch.

What a pre-shipment inspection can reveal

PSI can review finished quantity, random samples, workmanship, measurements, functions, accessories, assortment, retail packs, export cartons, labels, barcodes and carton marks. It is normally better positioned than DUPRO to assess shipment readiness because the final goods and packaging should be available.

Correction, containment and re-inspection

When DUPRO finds a recurring defect, ask the supplier to identify affected production, stop the cause where appropriate, segregate suspect goods, propose correction and show evidence before production continues. The buyer should define whether corrected units and new output will be checked again.

How order type changes the decision

A stable repeat order may rely mainly on PSI. DUPRO becomes more useful after material, process, packaging, factory, tooling or design changes, or recurring defects.

Private-label, new-mold, hand-finished, multi-SKU and long-cycle orders can justify earlier evidence. The higher the cost of late correction, the stronger the case for DUPRO.

Machinery, safety and compliance boundaries

Machinery may need milestone reviews, a factory acceptance test and technical specialists. Define output, safety devices, drawings, software, accessories, spares, manuals and commissioning evidence. PSI can verify shipment contents and packing but cannot replace performance acceptance.

Neither inspection replaces required laboratory testing, technical documentation or certification.

Packaging machine order

A buyer uses production milestones and a technical factory acceptance test to review controls, output and safety functions.
